Amherst College will no longer endorse the use of Lord Jeffery Amherst as its mascot, a move student protesters have demanded for months. The New York Times reports the Board of Trustees announced on Tuesday that the Massachusetts college would stop using the image of the 18th-century British military commander in “its official communications, its messaging, and its symbolism.”
